Bill MacKay Creates Personal Budgeting Breakthrough for The Not-So Rich
| My Credentials |
Here are my credentials stripped of the usual puffery. I have traveled, lived, and worked in the U.S., Canada, and Scotland. I consult primarily with senior management. With a B.A. (Economics), experience as a stock broker, and past owner of a small distribution company I have a working knowledge of cash flow management, credit management, saving, and investing. |

| Now, What's Important | What I knew how to but didn’t do (budgeting) and had no interest in doing (saving) is what is relevant to this book. Their absence created a lifestyle problem that was the catalyst for my successful experiment to find a solution (Spending On Purpose). This should be some consolation to those who find themselves like I did at midlife with little in the bank (the problem), spending habits (yours or a partner’s) that escape an honest scrutiny, and a lifestyle you don’t really want. | |
| Budgeting | I tried but couldn’t shoe-horn our lifestyle expenses into the traditional budget pigeonholes and keep them there. Neither my wife nor I liked the limitations on spontaneity that budgeting demands. And with both of us busy, it was easy to ignore. | |
| Saving | We were raising a family and establishing a business. And we wanted it all! Saving had to get in line behind what really mattered more. Why worry? Our education gave us the confidence that we could always earn a living. | |
| Retirement | I remember my father retiring with a modest pension. But his situation never really touched me enough to change my behavior. I was an entrepreneur creating my own reality. | |
| The Crisis | Unexpectedly, midlife arrived. With it came a diagnosis. My wife had cancer. Within two years she was gone. | |
| The Lesson | The experience of the years that followed gave birth to the insights and process I share with you in SAVING Is for Suckers. The book’s subtitle, Unless You’re Spending On Purpose, captures the real essence and spirit of what I learned. | |
| Summary | In summary (now a little puffery), Spending On Purpose works. It may not be the solution to all your problems but it provides a new way of looking for the answers if you’re still searching for a better lifestyle. | |
